“A SIMPLE SCHOOL PAGE IS MEANINGFUL” – NEWSPAPER “A THEBAIDINHA” DO COL´GIO NOSSA SENHORA AUXILIADORA - 1932

Abstract

O The present article analyzes the "school page" A Thebaidinha, a publication created in the 1930s at the Colégio Salesiano Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora located in Aracaju-SE, Brazil. We adopt the school publication as both a source and an object of scientific investigation, taking into consideration its content and materiality. We utilize the theoretical and methodological contributions of Roger Chartier (1991), particularly the concepts of representation and materiality. The concept of school culture conceived by Viñao Frago (1994) also aids in this historiographical operation, along with the studies of Amaral (2013), Bastos (2013), and Luca (2006), which complement the understanding of the research object. The investigation into the materiality of the newspaper A Thebaidinha revealed traces of a student culture, where the paper, letters, column distribution, texts, photographs, and other graphic resources that marked its pages express the ideals of education and society prevailing in the 1930s in Sergipe, specifically. The newspaper constituted a type of reading and writing practice that served to stimulate "free text," allowing children to express everything from everyday events to expectations about their neighborhood or city.
