Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the predominant type of thinking expressed in the projects presented by schools from the Criciúma region during the Regional Mathematics Fair of the Carboniferous Region of Santa Catarina, held in 2022. The analysis proved to be relevant, considering that the educational guidelines of the region emphasize the development of theoretical knowledge in Mathematics. In total, two projects from different educational levels were examined in detail. It was observed that many of them did not comply with the formatting standards established by the organizing institution, which hindered the understanding of their contributions. Regarding content, most projects displayed characteristics of both empirical and theoretical thinking, with a predominance of the former. The empirical approaches highlighted a focus on the practical application of mathematical concepts, often at the expense of deeper theoretical exploration. The results indicated the need to develop pedagogical strategies that promote a deeper and more critical understanding of mathematical concepts, encouraging teachers to move beyond superficial application and to foster a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge. Furthermore, the research emphasized the importance of teachers reflecting on how knowledge is constructed and implemented in the educational context, with the aim of enriching the teaching and learning process of Mathematics.
