The cooperative movement in Peru has gone through different moments in its articulation with the capitalist world-system; it had a period of emergence, another of consolidation and another of marginalization. A central element is reciprocity and its relationship with cooperativism. Cooperativism is proposed, as part of a larger social fabric, as an alternative to capitalist-colonial instrumental rationality, from its genuine version linked to reciprocity.

Las primeras cooperativas peruanas estuvieron en el Callao influenciadas por el “mutualismo artesanal y obrero” (Mogrovejo, 2012, 343), también en Arequipa con la Cooperativa de Consumo de los Empleados y Obreros de los Ferrocarriles del Sur en Arequipa , en Cusco con la Cooperativa Cafetalera Maranura en la provincia de La Convención (1960), la Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito San Francisco Javier en Lima (1961), la Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito Quillabamba (1964), la Central de Cooperativas Agrarias de la Convención y Lares (COCLA) se conforma en 1967; en Puno, con la Cooperativa Cafetalera San Juan de Oruro (Borda y Basso, 2020, págs. 29-30).
El pensamiento de Proudhon influyó en esta parte del mundo, a través de sus obras como ¿Qué es la Propiedad? (1840).

Son 666 cooperativas inscritas en el Registro Nacional de Cooperativas Agrarias con 80,724 socios productores (Torres, 2024, p. 23)

Las cooperativas son reguladas por la Superintendencia de Banca, Seguros y AFP (SBS). Sin embargo, es cuestionada porque no brinda un trato diferenciado a las cooperativas en el sistema financiero.
