ANALYSIS OF THE BACTERICIDAL EFFECT OF TREA OIL ON BACTERIA THAT CAUSE URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS: AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

Abstract

Urinary tract infections constantly affect the lives of individuals, especially women. Therefore, efficient methods are necessary to combat pathogens that cause urinary infections, the most prevalent of which are antibiotics. However, bacterial resistance to these drugs has become recurrent, resulting in a public health problem, making it necessary to develop new approaches to treat infections caused by bacteria. Thus, essential oils have been gaining prominence, as some of them, such as Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel oil, have the potential to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Therefore, this study explores the bactericidal effects of Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel essential oil on bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, based on the observation and analysis of the inhibition halos present in Mueller Hinton plates, evaluating the presence or absence of bacterial resistance with the naked eye. In places that showed sensitivity, the researchers measured the size of the growth inhibition halo. In short, this study presented positive results regarding the bactericidal effect of the essential oil, especially when it comes to gram-positive bacteria. However, more research is needed on this subject with the use of more types of bacteria and essential oils and their respective concentrations.
