Abstract

The increase in use of psychotropic drugs in recent decades may be related to growth of psychiatric diagnoses, as well as the introduction of new medications by the pharmaceutical industry. In public health, the distribuition of psychotropic drugs can occur in different services. The goal of this research is to conduct a survey on the consumption of psychotropic drugs distribuited in the basic health network of the city of Maringá-PR. It is a qualitative study carried out through documentary analysis in 15 Dispensing Units between 01/05/2022 and 30/04/2023. The psychotropic drugs that stood out the most were: Fluoxetine, Amitriptyline, Venlafaxine, Carbamazepine, Sodium Valproate, Lithium Carbonate, Risperidone, and Clonazepam. The strongest evidence was found for Fluoxetine, an antidepressant refered as the "happy pill" in today's consumer society which demands, at any cost, high performance, well-being, and productivity. Primary Care is highlighted as a promoter of innovative practices in mental health care. Strategies aimed at the proposal of Expanded Clinic that aim at demedicalization are put in focus. It is emphasized that interdisciplinary work, listening and welcoming, responsible, comprehensive, and longitudinal care enables the construction of autonomy in the therapeutic project and the establishment of supports that go beyond the medicalization of psychic suffering.
