Abstract

Abstract: Colorectal cancer represents the most common malignant neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. Colorectal cancer is characterized by hereditary and sporadic factors (alcohol consumption, high fat intake, high-calorie foods, processed and ultra-processed foods, obesity, smoking and sedentary lifestyle). Several risk factors may contribute to the onset of this neoplasm. However, food seems to be the factor that contributes the most to the development of CRC and is capable of altering the intestinal microbiota. Thus, the objective of this study was to carry out a bibliographic review for the purpose of analyzing the influence of food on the prevention of colorectal cancer. To this end, original and review articles were sought. The consumption of red meat, processed and ultra-processed foods, intake of fatty and calorie-rich foods help in the development of CRC. However, the high consumption of functional foods such as fruits, vegetables, fibers, good fats, probiotics and prebiotics help in the prevention of neoplasm. Finally, seeking a healthy diet can modulate the intestinal microbiota and prevent the emergence of colorectal cancer.
