Abstract

Objective: This paper presents a literature review of the newly updated Brazilian hypertension guidelines, aiming to provide a narrative on the new blood pressure values, targets, diagnosis, and treatment. Development: For this study, a comprehensive literature search was conducted from December 2023 to September 2025. This search included electronic databases and scientific evidence sources such as PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and national and international guidelines. Results: Systemic arterial hypertension is the most prevalent disease worldwide, significantly increasing cardiovascular risk. Early diagnosis, combined with achieving targets, significantly reduces the risk of complications. The diagnostic criteria for hypertension in the Brazilian guidelines were recently updated. Normal blood pressure is defined as <120 mmHg systolic and <80 mmHg diastolic; prehypertension as 120 to 139 mmHg systolic and <89 mmHg diastolic. Nonpharmacological measures are the initial treatment for individuals with BP ≥ 120/80 mmHg and are essential in all phases of hypertension treatment. Conclusions: The updated guideline aims to optimize hypertension control, reduce complications, and improve patients’ quality of life.
