Abstract

Mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting is related to untreated preoperative comorbidities. This study aimed to analyze predictors of postoperative mortality in patients undergoing CABG between January 2020 and July 2024 at a referral hospital in the extreme south of Santa Catarina, Brazil. This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study with quantitative and qualitative approaches, including 680 electronic medical records to evaluate pre-existing comorbidities associated with postoperative outcomes. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Most patients were male, with a mean age of 62.6 years, and showed a high prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension (83.8%). The main surgical indication was stable angina (38.8%), which was associated with lower mortality rates compared with other clinical conditions. Overall mortality was 14.1%, significantly higher among patients with acute myocardial infarction and aortic dissection. Advanced age (p < 0.001) and active smoking at the time of surgery (p = 0.038) were independent factors associated with death. In conclusion, postoperative mortality after CABG was mainly influenced by advanced age, smoking, and acute coronary syndromes. Stable angina was associated with better prognosis, reinforcing the relevance of early identification and appropriate management of risk factors in these patients.
